Step by step instructions are given in this
book for the manufacture of an advanced design of skeleton clock. The clock
consists of chiming, striking, and going mechanisms, all of which are to fairly
standard lines and include the latest devices used in spring driven mechanical
clocks to protect the movement against the casual meddler. The mechanism also
permits the hands to turned backwards without damage. A favourite subject for
the designers of skeleton clocks has always been cathedrals, not only because of
their majestic shapes and designs, but also I think because of the permanence
they exude.
In my research into skeleton clock design I have only come
across one other St Paul's clock and that is one shown in Michael Pearson's book
"The beauty of clocks". The maker of this clock is not stated and I
would guess, unknown, but is dated circa 1860. Perhaps this rarity for depicting
St Paul's in clock form is because of the absence of tall spires which are so
readily copied and mistaken belief that the dome could not be copied in two
dimensional form which is essentially the front and back frame of the clock.
This belief could not be further from the truth as you can see from the
photographs in this book, and if you undertake the labour of love necessary in
constructing this clock you will perhaps obtain some of the feelings that Sir
Christopher Wren must have had when designing and constructing such a beautiful
dome crowned with a magnificent
cross.
