The clock is an updated edition of my original 8-day wall
clock, made in 1971 and published in the Horological Journal. In addition I
have made improvements to the wooden case (including an alternative brass
case). A seconds hand has been added and more authentic minute and hour hands
designed. Optional extras include datework or perpetual datework to the Rev
Ludlum's design. Henry Ward's ingenious striking is another option. This is a
full strike without the addition of a second wheel train. Although seemingly a
complicated piece of machinery and one that would require a fully equipped
workshop, this is not so. The author carries out all of his clockmaking on a
Myford ML 7 lathe (now 45 years old) however the clock can be made on almost
any lathe including small lathes such as the Unimat 3. Wheelcutting is shown
being performed on this little lathe and all the wheels in this movement can
be cut on the Unimat 3. Great trouble has been taken by the author to give
full and accurate descriptions of all the processes involved in making a clock
especially on subjects such as wheelcutting, dial matting, crossing out wheels
and the preparation of the files etc. I hope that this manual will come to be
regarded as the definitive work on the making of a clock. J Wilding
