This project was designed as a beginner's introduction to
metalwork and the use of a small lathe. It is a simple weight driven mechanism
designed to run for some 6 minutes for the purpose of timing a boiled egg. At
the completion of the time period a single stroke is sounded on the bell. The
entire construction can be carried out with one of the small hobby lathes
available today. In fact the lathe chosen here was the Unimat 4. In order not
to involve the beginner with wheel cutting the two gears required are
available from RiteTime. The escapement chosen for this timer is the MacDowall
single pin escapement which must be the easiest to make escapement ever
designed. As a result of exposure at several model engineering exhibitions it
became clear that many constructors would like the timer to run continuously,
in other words to be converted into a clock. This has now been done and the
description is contained in this book. It was also requested that the original
two gears and the two extra gears required in the conversion be described as
well. Many constructors wanting to make 'every part'. There is absolutely no
dificulty in cutting these gears in the Unimat 4 lathe. A full description is
given of the process including the various ways of dividing in order to obtain
the wheel counts. Full details of the addresses of all the material suppliers
is given at the end of the book. The book contains
60 pages and over 200 illustrations.
